Overview
A UNESCO World Heritage site, Shantiniketan translates to the abode of peace and was named after the guest house built by Maharshi Debendranath Tagore, father of poet Rabindranath Tagore. The land, characterized by red soil and paddy fields, was purchased by Rabindranath’s father after discovering it during a boat ride.
- 🌍 Rabindranath Tagore envisioned a school based on the traditional gurukul system, where students live with their teacher.
- 🏫 This vision led to the transformation of his father's ashram into an open-air school.
- 🎓 After receiving the Nobel Prize, Rabindranath expanded the school and renamed it from Visva-Vidyalay to Visva-Bharati.
- 📜 The name Visva-Bharati means communion of the world with India and reflects its global mission.
- 🏛️ In 1951, Visva-Bharati was recognized as a central university.
