Rila Monastery is the largest on the Balkan peninsula and the most popular landmark in Bulgaria. UNESCO site since 1979, it is not just a temple but the symbol of Bulgaria. During the centuries that medieval fortress managed to keep the Bulgarian traditions, the language and the culture of the people. It is located deeply into the heart of Rila mountain, naturally protected by vertical cliffs in a very scenic location, where two rivers join together at 1150 m above the sea level. Later we will stop at the cave of Ivan Rilski, the hermit who founded the monastery in the 10th century. He spent a few years of his life isolated from the society in a service of God.
