Somiedo Natural Park day-trip from Oviedo and Gijon
Overview
Join a tour of the Somiedo Natural Park, declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2000. This area, one of the first protected spaces in Asturias since 1988, is one of the best-preserved in northern Spain. With 29,164 hectares, the park offers a unique environment that perfectly reflects the ethnography of the Asturian mountains.
The tour begins with a visit to the Alto de la Farrapona mountain pass. Along the way, you will pass through an area with viewpoints where it's possible to spot bears. Once there, you will take a walk to Lake La Cueva, a stunning location surrounded by mountains that offers spectacular views.
Next, you will head to Las Veigas to visit the Somiedo Ecomuseum, where you will learn about traditional trades, transhumance, and the typical thatched cottages of the area. You will also visit Pola de Somiedo, the capital of the council, a charming Asturian village hidden among the mountains since the 13th century, located by the Somiedo River. Here, you will stroll through its cobblestone streets and discover its most notable buildings. You will have free time here for lunch and to enjoy the local cuisine.
Finally, you will head to the village of La Peral, an ancient "braña vaqueira," where the vaqueiros (transhumant herders) lived with their animals during the spring, summer, and autumn. There, you will visit the Mirador del Príncipe, offering breathtaking views of the valley.
