Described by Mandela as a 'gilded cage', his time at this prison was a combination of luxury and confinement. Mandela was not given a cell while being in prison here, but a comfortable Villa, with numerous bedrooms, a swimming pool, a personal chef and a view of the Breathtaking Drakenstein Mountains. This was his last imprisonment, before he became a free man in February 1990.
