Beginners generally start in the white-water zone (broken waves closer to shore). The instructor helps position each surfer and often physically pushes the board into waves so students can focus on timing and standing up.

Paddling practice
Catching white-water waves lying down
Pop-up attempts
Riding straight toward shore
Learning to turn slightly left/right
Intermediate lessons may include:
Reading unbroken waves
Timing takeoffs
Turning techniques
Going “out back”
Improving paddling efficiency

Early mornings are often cleaner and calmer
Afternoon wind can make waves choppier
Summer usually has smaller beginner-friendly surf
Winter can bring larger swells
