Its towering Corinthian columns, though only partially standing today, offer a powerful glimpse into the grandeur and ambition of ancient Athens. (pass by)
  • As you continue your journey, you'll pass by the Arch of Hadrian, a magnificent gateway that once marked the division between ancient and Roman Athens. • Panathenaic Stadium
Next, you'll see the Panathenaic Stadium (also known as Kallimarmaro), a magnificent ancient Greek stadium steeped in history. Renowned as the site of the Panathenaic Games, it stands as a powerful testament to ancient Greek athleticism and cultural pride. Today, it remains a cherished symbol of Greece’s rich heritage and a must-see attraction for visitors from around the world.
  • Acropolis
For those who choose to visit the Acropolis, your guide will escort you to the entrance. Once inside, you’ll explore this iconic archaeological site on your own. At the heart of this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the Parthenon, a masterpiece of architecture and a lasting symbol of democracy—one of the greatest achievements of the ancient world. Important Accessibility Information: Visiting the Acropolis involves extensive walking, including climbing 75 steps at the entrance and navigating uneven, slippery marble paths. This can be physically demanding, especially during the summer when crowds are large and temperatures high. For those with limited mobility, it is recommended to follow the guide and explore Areopagus and Herodion instead.
  • For those who do not wish to walk up to the Acropolis, you will follow your guide to Areopagus Hill, a place steeped in history and legend. In ancient times, it served as the meeting place of the high court of Athens and was a hub for legal proceedings, philosophical debates, and political decision-making. Today, it offers a fascinating glimpse into Athens' rich past, along with breathtaking panoramic views of the Acropolis, the city below, and the surrounding landscape.
  • Then you'll walk to the Odeon of Herodes Atticus (Herodion), nestled on the southern slopes of the Acropolis. This magnificent stone theatre, built in 161 AD, was commissioned by the wealthy Roman benefactor Herodes Atticus in memory of his wife. It remains one of Athens' most iconic and historically significant landmarks.
  • Then, you'll all meet back on the bus and head to Syntagma Square, the vibrant heart of Athens, situated in front of the Hellenic Parliament and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. A key highlight of this iconic square is the changing of the guard ceremony, performed by the Evzones, the elite Presidential Guards. This ceremonial display, held every hour, is a fascinating tradition and a major attraction for visitors. A stop will be made here to witness this unique and memorable ceremony up close, giving you the chance to fully experience this historic moment.
  • The Academy of Athens
Next, you'll see the University of Athens, Greece’s oldest university, which showcases elegant neoclassical architecture with grand columns and an impressive entrance. Nearby, the National Library of Greece is another beautiful example of neoclassical design. The Academy of Athens, part of the architectural trilogy, features statues of renowned Greek philosophers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. If traffic permits, a photo stop will be made to capture the grandeur of these iconic landmarks.
