TONGAN LEGEND says that the ... Tsunami rock in the village of Kalaʻau in Tongatapu has a mythical link to demigod Maui. Legend has it that Maui was angrily awoken by crowing of his father's rooster and he tried to kill it. The frightened fowl escaped from 'Eua to Tongatapu, but Maui kept hurling rocks at it. He then hurled this huge stone and killed the bird.

The flying fox sanctuary at the village of Kolovai which is home to hundreds of fruit bats. Recorded in Tongan song and legend from time immemorial. These primordial fruit bats-harmless, immobile and seemingly lifeless-hang eerily from rows of ironwood pines along the main village road. They are considered sacred and a delicacy to be consumed only by members of the Royal Family.

Ancient Royal Tombs of LapahaThe Langi at Mu’a are one of the great Royal Burial sites of the Pacific. Around the 13th Century the Tu’i Tonga moved the capital to Lapaha where it remained until the 19th century. The construction of the massive tombs was a way to demonstrate the spiritual and political power of the Tu’i Tonga. Langi's are platforms of earth with a stepped pyramid effect supported by carefully placed retaining walls. Some of the stones used to make the Langi are believed to have come from 'Uvea and Futuna. Large numbers of workers were needed to construct the Langi, as some stones measure up to 18 feet in length.
