2.5-hour guided walking tour of Sasso Barisano and Matera Underground
Overview
The tour will start in Piazzetta Pascoli with an archaeological and anthropological introduction to the history of Matera.
Crossing the historic centre called "Il Piano", you'll reach Piazza Vittorio Veneto where the nineteenth-century “Ferdinandea” fountain stands, together with the beautiful balcony overlooking the Sasso Barisano area and Civita hill. The tour will then continue with a visit of the rock-hewn church of Santo Spirito, whose hypogeum reveals "a city beneath the city". After reaching the heart of the Sasso Barisano – which used to be the bourgeois neighbourhood of the ancient city – you'll enter a typically furnished cave-house, proof of how the poor inhabitants of Matera have lived until the mid-fifties.
Going back towards the historical centre, the tour will end with a small tasting of some traditional products from the region.
