-
Nieuwe KerkI will meet you here on one of the oldest market squares still in use today, next to the statue of Hugo Grotius. We will also end the tour here. The Dutch royal family is burried in this church (as is Hugo). It is the second tallest church of the country. You'll learn more about it!
-
Stadhuis DelftThe old town hall of Delft is one of the most important historical buildings of the city. We will walk by it as we leave the Markt square on our way to the Old Church. What is so interesting about the town hall? I'll tell you!
-
Old ChurchAfter leaving the market square and passing by the butter house, the weighing house and Anthony van Leeuwenhoek's old house, we will go to the old beer brewing quarter and see the Old Church, the leaning tower of Delft. Johannes Vermeer is buried there. But why is it leaning? We'll find out
-
Museum Prinsenhof DelftOpposite of the Old Church is the Prinsenhof, a former monastery. This place has played a deciding role in Dutch history, as our Father of the Fatherland has been assassinated here. Let's find out more about it.
-
Gemeenlandshuis van DelflandOn our way down the Oude Delft canal, we will see the oldest house of Delft. It now has a heavily decorated facade, as it houses the Water Board since 1645. What is this and why was (and is) it so important?
-
As we walk further south, having walked by many impressive houses on the Oude Delft canal, we will find a large state weapons Armory, and the main building of the Delft department of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Let's find out more about Delft's role in the golden days of the Dutch Republic. Also around here, we can take a look at the exact spot where Vermeer was standing when he made his painting 'View of Delft'.
-
As we walk up north again, along Delft's second oldest canal and former grain market, we will pass by the old synagogue of the city.
-
BeestenmarktYour last stop is the Beestenmarkt (a former animal's market), next to the Markt square (where we started). This is a picturesque place, often crowded with people. If you want to, I will give you some tips on where to get the best beer/snacks/dinner! Enjoy the rest of your stay.
