Kayak-sailing North Cascades National Park
Experience unavailable
Overview
This entire trip is about interacting with nature. Harnessing the wind to slide, near effortlessly, across the water. Novice sailors will learn the basics while seasoned sailors will delight in the thrill and beauty of the area.
Diablo Lake makes a perfect setting, with turquoise waters and towering mountains the area is truly picturesque, however what make the area so perfect are the predictable winds. Pressure changes caused by the Sun’s heat passing over the Cascades cause winds that rise out of the West every afternoon. While canoes and kayaks are advised to seek shelter before this predictable event, sailing kayaks can take advantage.

Regardless of experience, you are going to sail the turquoise waters of Diablo Lake. Interacting with one of the most beautiful environments in North Cascades National Park.
We begin with “ground school”. Before entering the water you will be able to operate a sail and make necessary adjustments. People often assume that this is a time consuming operation, but as the operation is very easy, it normally only takes a few minutes.
Next the group will launch into the water. Winds tend to be light in this area as it is sheltered, making for a great place to practice steering while adjusting sails to match the change.
After a brief on water practice, the group is ready to venture out. Passing under Highway 2 we head north. This requires “tacking” into the afternoon wind in order to reach the main body of the lake.
Throughout the afternoon your guide will be nearby to give you advice if needed, but also interpretive discussion on the area, insights into the park, and entertaining stories.
Return tends to be the easiest part of the day. As the group had to tack into the wind (travel up-wind) in the beginning, heading back is downwind allowing for travel with the forces of nature.
