Written by Gaetano Donizetti with the help of the librettist Eugène Scribe, this play premiered in Paris in 1840 and included a ballet scene, an innovative score structure and a reworked tenor part.
The action is set in Armenia, where, during the persecution of Christians, a young woman has to choose not only between two religions, but also between her husband and her former lover. This play shows the contrast between the Italian bel canto and the French Romanticism and the director Cezary Tomaszewski puts the accent on the tragic history of Armenia.
