Great Meteoron MonasteryThe Monastery of Great Meteoron or Transfiguration of Christ, expresses the greatness and history of the Holy Meteora, as it is the oldest and most important monastery.
-
Saint Nicholas MonasteryThe Monastery of Saint Nicholas of Anapafsas is literally suspended in air on a small rock and is the first monastery that we meet on our way from Kastraki village to the stone forest of Holy Meteora.
-
Holy Trinity Monastery (Agia Triada)The Monastery of the Holy Trinity is the third oldest monastery in Meteora and is the most difficult to reach, since the visitor has to cross a downhill path and then ascend 145 steps carved into the rock.
-
The Monastery of Saint Stephen’s is located just above the city of Kalampaka and is the most accessible monastery in Meteora, as there are no steps to reach the entrance and the access is easy through a small stone bridge.
-
Byzantine Church of the Assumption of Virgin MaryThe Byzantine church of of the Assumption of Virgin Mary is situated in the old district of Kalampaka and is the oldest preserved monument in the whole region of Meteora. It is believed that it was built before the 7th century, but officially the church dates back to the 11th century, 300 years before the construction of the monasteries in Meteora. Remnants of an ancient Greek temple of Apollo have been embedded in the wall of the church.
- The Monastery of Saint Nicholas “Badovas” or “Kofinas” was founded in the 14th century in place of an old hermitage and is located on the edge of Meteora, in the canyon that separates the Kastraki from Kalampaka, inside the cave in a steep cliff. It was renovated in 1893 by Eugenia the first woman nun. The monastery renovated and structured into six levels, at a height of 50 meters from the ground. In the temple that is located on the 5th floor there are superb murals of the 18th century and remarkable ecclesiastical heirlooms. Today the monastery has been renovated, but remains uninhabited. It is worth to follow the path that leads to the monastery and admire also the hermitage of Saint Gregory the Theologian, and the hermitage of Saint Anthony in the same canyon. (pass by)
