Experience one of Mexico City’s most exciting high-altitude day hikes and summit Pico del Águila (3,930 m / 12,893 ft), the highest point in the Ajusco range — right on the edge of the city. We’ll take the legendary Devil’s Backbone route, a beautiful and adventurous ridgeline with panoramic views, volcanic rock formations, and a true alpine feel — all without leaving the capital.
This hike is perfect for adventurous travelers, nature lovers, photographers, and anyone training for higher mountains in Mexico or abroad. It’s challenging but accessible: expect steady climbing, open ridgelines, pine forest, and fresh mountain air.
We go at a comfortable pace and take breaks — the goal is to enjoy the day, not rush.
What to Expect:
Pickup at a convenient spot in Mexico City.
About 1-hour drive to the trailhead
Forest trail warm-up + steady ascent. Devil’s Backbone ridgeline section (fun, exposed, not technical)
Summit views over CDMX, Popocatépetl & Iztaccíhuatl
Drive back to the city (optional stop for quesadillas)
Distance: approx. 8 km (round-trip)
Elevation gain: approx. 650 m
Duration: 6-7 hours total (hiking time 4-5 hours)
Difficulty: Moderate to challenging
